Karen Shewan
In my work I examine and respond to landscape or place, both its historical and geological past, and its present state. Archives, historical material, images, plants, and rocks all inform my practice. Past memories, and real or imagined layers within spaces, fascinate me.
My art practice includes mixed media drawing and painting, collage, printing, ecoprinting, photography, bookmaking and land art.
Based part of the year in Edinburgh and part in the Highlands, inspiration often comes from walking both the historical city streets and the magnificent Highland hills. My garden in Easter Ross also provides endless natural material for printing and making natural pigments.
After working for many years in the NHS, I studied art part time at Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Edinburgh, completing the Certificate in Higher Education in Art and Design. I’ve also completed courses in a variety of printing techniques at Edinburgh Printmakers and Highland Print Studio.
Places where my work has been exhibited include: Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Macmillan Art Show, Scottish National Gallery, Upright Galley (Edinburgh), Edinburgh City Art and Design Library, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, University of Highlands and Islands, and Nairn Community Arts Centre.
My work has been bought by individuals in the UK, Austria and by the National Library of Scotland.
